Herbal Medicine

Herbal medicine has ancient roots and forms the foundation upon which medicine and pharmacy have relied for centuries. It continues to be practiced today, both at the popular and academic levels. Remarkably, approximately 70% of commonly used medications are either herbal extracts or derivatives.

Plants, in general, and medicinal plants, specifically, contain biologically active compounds—some with medicinal properties and others with toxicity. This dual nature provides an opportunity for therapeutic use, but caution is essential. Herbal remedies can be directly harmful or interact with other medications. Therefore, their prescription should be entrusted to specialized physicians.
